Shopping Extravaganza in Bangkok

During the daytime, the Ko Rattanakosin on the eastern bank of the Chao Phraya River is where everyone goes, and it is where the old city was located. The fine historical architecture of the glittering Grand Palace, the Golden Mount and the Wat Phra Kaew will really impress the tourist. Also here is the Wat Pho, the Wat Mahathat and the Wat Suthat. The main theatres and galleries are in this area.

Bangkok use to be named, the Venice of the East, but some canals were filled in and now the main canal area is around Thonburi, which lies west of the river. One can take a canal tour (Klong) and the main stops on the tour are at Wat Arun and the museum of Royal Barges.

The backpackers usually stay around the Thewet and Banglampoo districts. Just beside the Democracy building is where you will find a lot of the shopping stalls and shops on Khao San Road, and there are lots of cafes and restaurants around here, as well as inexpensive guesthouses and hotels. Around the Phra Arthit Road, one will be able to enjoy the great bars here at night.

The Dusit district has some fine visitor attractions like the Wat Benchamabophit, the Suan Pakkard Palace, Dusit Zoo, and the fine Vimanmek Palace.

One can take the skytrain at the weekend to the north Bangkok, where you will find the Chatuchak Weekend Market, which is very interesting. The airport is located 10 miles further north.

Near the Victory Monument in the city centre features many cool bars like the famous Saxophone Pub. There is a Skytrain stop here and this will be handy to access other areas of the city.
